Hard to Miss

Hall10I do believe it's impossible for anyone to go to Reykjavik and be able to say when they get back home : "Hallgrimskirkja? No, I missed that." Whether or not you visit the church itself--or even head up the hill just to see the exterior--there's no missing this gigantic landmark. The funny thing is, one fellow traveller did point it out to us like he was sharing arcane knowledge of some well-hidden, off-the-beaten track locale. I have more to say about that guy, but I will resist for the moment.

One thing I will say though is that the trip to the top of Hallgrimskirkja is well worth the effort and the cost (which I don't remember--give me a break, this isn't "Let's Go Reykjavik" after all--but I don't think it was too expensive). We took some wonderful pictures from the tower. If you browse through some of the photos over there on the right hand side of the page, I'm sure you'll find at least a couple of them.

When I was small I used to wander all over Reykjavik on my own or with my baby brother. I never worried about getting lost because when I did I´d simply ask the next person to point me in the direction of Hallgrímskirkja. I must admit I got a number of weird looks but hey I always made my way back home..... Those were the days. I can´t imagine letting my kids go off, sometimes with snacks and not expect them to return until it was time for the evening meal... A slight change of times?

I've been walking alot around down town Reykjavik lately, in different neighborhoods doing different things. One thing I noticed was where ever I was I could always see the tower of Hallgrimskirkja. I can't believe I never noticed that before, I've only been living here for about 24 years or so :)

great picture. we stayed at the hotel saga, which has an up-close-and-personal view of another bit of religious imagery, which is a bit less tasteful than the one shown here: an enormous white neon cross.
