My house and its surroundings, as seen in Borgarvefsjá A while ago the Reykjavík Blog mentioned an online map of Reykjavík and asked for links to others. As maps of Reykjavík (and surrounding townlets) go, there is no beating Borgarvefsjá if you... [Read More]

Hi!
I am thinking of spending my summer holidays in Iceland, and someone offered to exchange our houses. Mine is in France, on the Côte d'Azur, and the one in Reykjavik would be in "Reykjavik 105". What is it, Reykjavik 105? Is it a nice area, or some dull suburb? Thank you for the explanations you could provide!

I would say that 105 Reykjavík is a very good neighborhood. It is one of the older neighborhoods but with more space (wider streets where you can park without a big problem) and it's not as packed as the city center. 105 is full of trees in the gardens and it's much more peaceful in the weekends than the city center that becomes full of drunk people and noise. So... 105 is close to downtown but also very close to another interesting place: To the west is the city center and to the east is the Laugardalur valley. I won't talk about the old town here since I don't want to re-invent the wheel, there are enough webpages with information about it. There is a big sports area in Laugardalur, a fitness center, Reykjavík's largest swimming pool, a skating rink, a zoo and a family park, a botanic garden with alot of tree and plant species and small ponds with some birdlife, an interesting greenhouse and more and more. A camping area is in the nearer end of the valley and also the Ásmundur Sveinsson Sculpture Museum. The mall Kringlan should not be too far away if you like to walk a little (or alot!). Well, this is just something that comes up in my mind when I think of this place, I hope it helps. Bye and enjoy your stay when you come :)
