Updates

Well, I've been away from posting here for a week now. I apologize. I hope you didn't miss me too much. It's been a while since I published a Reykjavik interview but I'm happy to report that I have two great ones coming up in the next few days.

I've noticed that a lot of people find their way here by searching Google for "The Shortest Day of the Year." Do they just want to know what the shortest day is? Do they want to know interesting facts about it? I wonder. Oh, and speaking of interesting facts, that is another popular search topic: "interesting facts" or "interesting facts about Iceland". I hope that my "almost interesting facts" tide them over. Oh, and speaking of "Almost Interesting Facts of the Day" I've added links (over there on the right, under the pretty picture) to some of my "classic" entries for easy reference.

Sorry, but there's no way this is right. You're trying to tell me there are more blogs in Icelandic (275,000 speakers) than in Japanese (125 million speakers)?? And three times as many in Farsi as in German?

Sounds like they used some weird metric to measure this.

Hi Matt, first of all, thanks for reading and commenting on my blog. I appreciate the interest and feedback. You're making reference to one of the "Almost Interesting Facts of the Day" (for those of you who haven't read some of my earlier posts).

It's an interesting bit of statistical analysis, that's for sure. And, the authors of it do make a disclaimer that they hadn't (at the time that was published) fully analyzed the accuracy of their collection methods.

But I think there are plausible reasons for these shocking numbers. While I can only guess why there are so few Japanese language blogs (maybe blogs aren't popular there or maybe the collection of data just wasn't accurate) I do know that there are scores of blogs in Icelandic. Though the idea of 1 out of 40 Icelandic people having a blog at one time or another seems amazing, I do know that if you look through some of the Icelandic blogs I have listed, many of those blogs have a lengthy "friends list" of other Icelandic bloggers. I haven't counted the links, but I bet there are easily a hundred or so Icelandic bloggers listed in the various links on the blogs I have listed. (as an aside, I've spent far too little time updating that blogger list. So many great blogs missing from it!)

And as for Farsi being so popular, I do know that blogging is an extremely popular activity in Iran, often by people seeking an outlet to express their views. You can find a number of Iranian blogs listed on Jeff Jarvis's Buzz Machine web site. I'm sure that along with English-language blogs, many are written in Farsi.

Thanks for bringing up an interesting topic. I was amazed by the results myself.

Well, who knows?

I am reading "Red Storm Rising" by Tom CLancy and what do you know, a lot of it takes place in Iceland. The Russians bomb Keflavik and land at Hafnarfjordur and Akureyri and take over.

You're right. I haven't been keeping up with stuff, but I hope the new post was worth the wait.
